This morning I dug out a Digger so I'm officially in ! I must be crazy 'cause I've got two non-Toon builds on my bench already , plus my Trick-Or-Toon entry is started !

I've got a sealed one on my shelf too. Was thinking about using it for the contest but I'm going a different direction. Looking forward to seeing what you do to it.

Good ol' Digger was the first Weird-Oh I ever bought when they first came out. Can't wait to see where you go with it.

I remember building Digger and Drag Nut around the same time . . . not positive which one came first . Haven't cracked the box open yet but there's still plenty of time !

Digger came out in 1963. How could any kid pass up Digger after seeing the quintessential hot rod monster box art by Bill Campbell? Just blew me away. The colors and vibrancy were like nothing else on the shelves. The Roth monster kits came later. Unlike the Hawk Weird-ohs the Revell Roth kits looked like the box art which then blew me away all over again. What a great time to be a kid. It's no wonder I am still a nut for hot rod monsters.

Yep , in '63 I was in 3rd grade when I got Digger , also built Davey and Endsville Eddie . We lived in the San Jose area so probably bought them at Thrifty .

I was in 6th grade and in San Leandro not too far from you. I remember getting most all my models at the 5 & dime store! Got all my comic books at the drug store across the street from the 5 & dime. Good times for sure.

This contest sure has me finding out more and more about these cool old kits. You guys (well, that plus the "Weird-Ohs World" book, about Bill Campbell's artwork, over the years) got me looking at stuff I've never seen before. Stuff like the (apparently drawn by someone other than Campbell) collector's cards. I looked them up, online, once I found out they existed. One of my new faves of those cards says, "Digger loves a real quick start ... and sometimes he and his racer part!" That and the image the card supplied cracked me up!
Thanks for running this contest, guys! It's cool (re-) exploring all of this cool old toon hot rod stuff!

My time has been occupied with non-model related stuff , and I spent a couple days building my Ghost Of The Red Baron (which was really fun) , but I think I'll be cracking my Digger open in the next few days and get going on my entry !

Always been a big fan of Bill Campbell's artwork and especially the Weird-Ohs box art but this is the first one I've cracked open in 55 years ! Now I understand why Campbell was so disappointed when they cut the molds . I pieced things together to get some ideas . I think larger rear tires are in order , as well as a bigger engine and some frame detailing . Digger himself seems a bit bloated and could lose some weight . . . have to think about that a bit .

I think I have a plan . . . I started by cutting 1/2" out of the body width . Added some material around the back and fabbed a dashboard . Next I made a quick mold to Vac-U-Form the cowl/firewall . Then the rear shape was roughed in and the dash and firewall installed . Finally some body filler and then some sanding to get the rough shape of the body . As you can see I'm giving Digger a proper "T" Bucket dragster to race ! This was about three hours work this morning . Tomorrow I'll start on the frame .
