In my paper "Koolwheelz Collection" I have a number of Tom Daniels inspired models. Tom's designs had a huge impact on me as a kid. Even my artwork style changed as a result of his designs. I recently added another model to the Collection inspired by the Hemi Semi... When I created this model I had to pick a base colour and did a little research to find out the original plastic model colour. But it turns out that the model was issued in a variety of colours, so there wasn't an easy choice. I settled on red, but i always liked the look of the yellow version. So, for my Mild2Wild entry, I am going to rebuild the Hemi Semi kit...add a few more details ...and give it a whole new paint job...Yellow! Maybe even add some flames?! ...who doesn't love a truck with flames?!

I was just reading the clarification of categories for this contest...mild and wild. So I assume I have to decide what this build will be classed?
Mild is basically modifying a kit thats already out there. This is definitely based on a previous kit that I created and released in 2015. (Its a free download, print and build kit) But since I'm the original designer and scratchbuilder, and I have to go back to the computer to redesign the kit, I'm gonna call this Wild (basically scratchbuilt).
If theres a problem with this classification, please let me know. I'll repeat this comment in my other entry thread.

Quote :"I've gotten questions about what takes a "Mild" over to the "Wild" side and that really shouldn't be an issue . The two categories are just a quideline and you can enter your build in whichever one you want . So don't over think it . . . it's completely up to you !"

This is too cool. I've built thousands of paper models and detailed my builds on the paper model forums. But this is a lot of fun to be part of what is normally a "plastic" thing and share some of my work. I am amazed at some of the skills you guys have. And its really an honour to be here.
---------------------------- How big are your models generally? Its sometimes hard to tell in the photos posted here
...I try to relate to model kits that I know (for the scale size) but I am unfamiliar with many of these kits. I'm guessing 1/32-1/24...or as close as can be with toon kits?
I build Tanks and Planes and such, at 1/32 and bigger (up to 1/16), but these little Koolwheelz models of mine are a challenge because they are around 1/60 scale and smaller sometimes.

As I mentioned in another thread, I have been working on various projects and the Cartoons entries are slowly getting completed. I haven't taken as many photos as I should have, but I'll try to catch you up... Chassis for this model is created by assembly two flat panels with cross members. The basis of the Wheels is part of the chassis skeleton. 3D wheel parts will be attached...you can see part of the assembly in the background. I'm adding a lot more layers to create more relief, bulged sidewalls, etc. The large main Trailer Tires are assembled as a double unit. These are also the main support for the model. Other Wheels will be singles. Once again, everything is 65lb cardstock and all cut by hand with a Hobby Knife. In case you are wondering, my glue is Aleenes Tacky Craft Glue. A couple more pics of Tire and Chassis assembly.

While glue dries and parts on the Chassis set up, I'll assemble the basics of the Cab and Trailer Box. Both cab and Trailer assemble in the same manner. Three main parts - side panels and center strip. The center strips require scoring and folding at precise points. Side glue tabs are cut and folded. Then the center strips are pre-shaped. Side panel must be aligned and attached in perfect parallel to make sure the boxes stay square. As you can see, I am also printing second and third layer parts to add more details. I just added the grille, grille frame and headlamp assemblies. There will be a few more details: front bumper, side mirrors, roof details... Same goes for the Trailer. It needs to be assembled squarely. And I'll add a few 3D surface details by layering parts. I designed the chassis to also be the internal supports for the Cab and Trailer. These will just fit over the upper extensions and be glued into place.

Outrageously cool Dave!! Thanks much for sharing some of the design work involved.
Sometimes, I think I could do a paper model, but the idea of lining up the printed artwork just terrifies me 😲😄
I have made some paper bodied cars, but not modeled any compound curves etc in the doing so. Nor did they have any printed graphics etc on them. Just used the paper; poster board or microwave dinner box papers instead of styrene.
I just love the imagineering and designing you put into these- the framing/support for the cab and trailer 👍👍 Absolutely love the picture of the cab in your hand. 😎😎

All of this with the 3D effects and your graphics is blowing me away ! I've been a fan of the Tom Daniel Snap-Tite models forever and have a huge collection of them , and I'm addicted 'cause I still buy'em when I see'em . To answer your question about scale . . . I don't know exactly , size varies but most are around 4"- 6" long .

Thinking back, I remember getting my first Zingers kit. The Dune Buggy. And being very disappointed at the size of the car itself. Man it was small. Having built nothing but 1/24 scale cars up to that point, I think I assumed it would be the same ...just with an enlarged engine. lol So, the snap kits are fairly small too? And my paper version of Hemi Semi isn't too much smaller then The biggest difference being that I have to create and assembly the individual parts, before assembling the entire model. (Obviously a plastic kit comes with pre-molded parts). So paper models tend to be a lot more work in that respect. As a plastic modeller, you do your paint and finish after assembly. ...I do it before. In my case, I am a graphic and digital artist, so I can create a lot of realistic effects. But its about the same amount of work as goes into a post assembly painted model. ............ Finishing up the model now. Heres a few details. More layered surface details... I built a semi-Gas Tank for each side...again for 3D effect. And, I added some floating smoke to those Exhaust Stacks.

I think this is it for the Truck... the wheels turned out good. I didn't want to get too complicated with the assembly, but i did a little radial-motion blur on the wheel artwork. It works well I think. I just need to come up with some sort of stand or display base (before I take the final contest photos). Looks a little lost all by itself I'll have to think a bit more about that. For now, heres some photos of my yellow Hemi Semi!
