What are folks using for action paints that aren't really "made" for models. Liquitex basic is a tube type artist paint that's dirt cheap at like $4.00 for four ounces. Thinking about getting some smaller tubes and perhaps thinning it with alcohol to shoot out of an airbrush. I don't mind paying for dedicated model paint but it's kinda of expensive for the little bit that you get.

The stuff that I use is craft acrylic paint.I thin it with windshield washer fluid for brush painting and airbrushing. I also clear coat it with Rustoleum clear for protection.

Like they use for stenciling and the like? I'm going to look into it. It's gotta be more cost effective than buying tiny bottles of paint.

I saw that there. Thanks. I like acrylics because I can basically use water to rinse a brush clean enough after use. That and the smell doesn't knock me out like enamel paints can.

You're welcome Rev, I think you're gonna like this paint.Just remember when airbrushing this paint build the color up a little at a time.I use a hair dryer between coats.

Thanks again Sharp. I found the multi surface paint at Walmart for $.87! I got excited and got seven bottles. I just used some of the black and thinned it with alcohol. Seems to work just fine. Should have picked up some washer fluid. I need some for the van anyway.

Another product that sometimes works really well (with certain kinds of paints) as a flow-aid or additive is something called Floetrol.
You can get a ridiculously large quantity (by scale modeling standards) of it at most hardware stores, etc., and probably place like Wal-Mart, too. While not initially feeling super cheap, over time, due to the large container size and how little you need of it to actually make a significant difference, it will last most folks for a ridiculously long time. I don't want to say "a lifetime," but something in that ballpark.
Another benefit of the stuff (besides acting as a general hand-brushing and flow aid) is that I've used it with some barely-still-liquid-and-almost-half-petrified (in other words, BADLY dried up) acrylic paints, to "bring them back to life, again". I did that with some "Reaper" brand stuff that was many years old. (It's a paint type made for use with ultra-tiny gaming miniatures, so having thickened paint was a real no-no.)
It works really well with water-based house paints, too. And even then, a little goes a long way.
