Hi all. I'm gonna start a list of cool books, which might interest other toon modelers; because the books have a wealth of inspiration for we toon modelers. Feel free to chime in with names of books I've missed -- or jump in to add specific dates / issue numbers or whatever (and page numbers, if applicable) of magazines or periodicals which have a limited amount of cartoon goodness in them. (I know, for instance, that certain back issues of "Contest Models" annual issues once in a while include some pictures of some really well-done and inspirational cartoon car models. Would be nice to have a list of all such issues, etc.!) - - - - - - Here's a great book called "A Weird-Oh World: the Art of Bill Campbell". (He's the artist who created the "Weird-Ohs" series of model kits.) www.amazon.com/Weird-Oh-World-Art-Bill-Campbell/dp/0764346482/ - - - - - - Here's another classic. It's called "How to Draw Crazy Cars and Mad Monsters Like a Pro". (With oodles of drawings by Ed "Newt" Newton, and many other pros!) www.amazon.com/Draw-Crazy-Monsters-Motorbooks-Studio/dp/0760324719/ - - - - - - Any other great books or periodicals (or DVDs, for that matter!) out there? Add 'em to the list, so we can all check them out! Thanks!

Here's another pair of classics ... with these ones being two back issues of a magazine calling itself "Amazing Vehicular Modeler". amazingmodeler.com/avm.htmlEDIT -- Although those two back issues, above, each have lots of cool toon-related eye candy in them, and are well worth the money and then some, in my personal opinion, it's only fair to warn readers that those back issues are not 100% "toons" from cover to cover. It's kind of a mix of toons and showrods. (Which is no bad thing!) My point is: if you liked what they put on display in those two issues of "Amazing Vehicular Modeler," and you need a fix of similar stuff, readers who aren't familiar with every issue of "Amazing Figure Modeler" -- (sometimes fondly called "AFM" for short) -- would probably like to know that there are two articles by David Fisher in back issues of AFM. See the list below for the details on those articles. - - - - - - Article title: "The Wolfman's Wagon: On The Highway To Howl" Author: David Fisher Where: "Amazing Figure Modeler" issue # 46, pages 26 through 33 inclusive. (Minus 1.5 pages for advertisements). - - - - - - Article title: "Creature's Beach Blaster" Author: David Fisher Where: "Amazing Figure Modeler" issue # 57, pages 24 through 29 inclusive. - - - - - - If I've missed any more articles like that, or ones that toon readers would love to see -- (seems to me that several articles by Jim Bertges would qualify; here and/or in the sadly-now-defunct Modeler's Resource magazine?!) then feel free to point 'em out! That's what this list is for!

Yes, some are hard to find, or out-of-print and very expensive these days ... but some aren't expensive or hard to find.
Amazon has a "wish list" feature that I use often, whenever I see a title of a book that I like ... but don't like the current price. I just put that book title onto my "wish list" on my Amazon account, and watch it over time. When it gets low enough, then I'll buy it.
Another idea (which may or may not work, depending on where a person lives) is the "Inter-Library Loan" service that many United States libraries are a part of. One of the books that Fletch shows, for instance, stays at around $100 a copy if a person wants to buy it. I kept waiting for the crazy sellers to come down on their prices, but they were not in any hurry to do that. So, instead, I just looked up the ISBN number of that book, the exact title, author's name, publisher's name, etc. (most or all of which Amazon tells you, in their listing for that book) and then put in an order with my local library, to see if they could find me a copy of that book. A few weeks of waiting happened. Then they told me the books were at my local library, and for me to come pick them up. I had to pay the library two dollars per book, and could only keep them for a couple of weeks or whatever ... but that's WWWAAAAYYYYY better than the idea of paying over a hundred dollars to BUY that same book. You could always treat the Inter-Library Loan process as a "preview" of a book that costs a lot of money. If you don't like the book, you're only out a few dollars. Beats the heck out of $100 (or whatever) for a book you have never seen; and don't know how much you'll like it!

Yea Ward, thanks for doing all the hard work.
The Hot Rod art books can be found at:
www.mastersofchickenscratch.com
They are pretty expensive but cool artwork for sure. You guys will have to check out the site to see if it is what you think it is.
And when I ordered the Chuck Miller book from him it came signed!

You're awesome Ward.... Thanks for taking the time to research and post !! Heehee! Thanks, Chuck ... and Fletch ... and ModelCarFan! I'm a read-a-holic. What can I say? Those of us who are (happily!) addicted to books, magazines, CD-ROMs, DVDs, and other forms of Visual Information Input gotta share notes on what's available! Gotta feed our collective habits, right?! EDIT -- for instance, I can't believe I (and others) almost left these great books off of the list: - - - - - - "Remembering Revell Models" www.amazon.com/Remembering-Revell-Model-Thomas-Graham/dp/0764329928/ - - - - - - "Monogram Models" www.amazon.com/Monogram-Models-Schiffer-Book-Collectors/dp/0764324810/ - - - - - - "Aurora Model Kits" www.amazon.com/Aurora-Model-Kits-Schiffer-Collectors/dp/0764325183/ - - - - - - Those three books, immediately above, have mostly "serious" models or models that aren't toon-related ... but there's plenty of show rod coverage and/or Rat Fink and/or Monster Rod coverage here or there, throughout any of those books. Another good one, if a person is into Show Rods, would be this instant classic: - - - - - - www.amazon.com/Americas-Wildest-Show-1960s-1970s/dp/1613250363/- - - - - -

If you are going to mention the Monogram and Revell and Aurora books by TG then you have to mention the best model book of all which is Classic Plastic. See what has been made as kits so you can get some great ideas from all sorts of weird figure and monster kits. I find this my number one "go to" book. Every modeler should have a copy of that! Plus some great early style hot rod monster stuff from one of the originators - Monte. Attachment Deleted
