Tried some woodworking today with so-so results , got a bunch of bubbles in it . I'll wet sand it tomorrow and re-clear , should be okay .

Still pluggin' away here . Not a lot of progress but I did manage to get some more painting done . I'm also working on some decals instead of pinstriping to separate the two colors . I have a feeling that once I figure out a pilot this thing will go together pretty quick !

Sweet looking baron ! The wood grain detail really makes it look real. I love the Blue Max idea too- I remember that movie !

I remember the watching the movie years ago and then it was on TV a month or so ago and decided to use the decals I had . It's a good movie too ! I was going to rob the driver from a Glitter Bug for the pilot , and then I remembered I had an old silicone mold of the McLapper driver . Only problem was I didn't have any resin so I tried some Bondo . . . it worked ! Now I have to do some whittling to get rid of the helmet !

It's fun trying some stuff that you wouldn't normally try using ... and finding out it works out fine!

Just for general info, to other readers in the group:
Something else that sometimes works really well are two-part, epoxy style sculpting putties. I've tried smooshing some Magic Sculpt into rubber molds, with very good results. A teeny (!) bit of water helps it to not stick too much, and to pick up surface details really well. When I have done this, I layer in some mixed Magic Sculpt, in small / thin layers (sort of like applying a gelcoat into a mold, as a first layer) to "get" all of the details. Then you can blop in thicker layers, to make solid parts -- (with or without waiting for the first layer to dry / harden, I mean) -- without picking up air bubbles etc.
To me, the benefit to starting with sculpting putty (as pushed into the mold itself) is that once it hardens, and you're cutting or grinding some of the casting away, it's all a very workable material that's made for that kind of use. Adding more onto it, later, using the same material, keeps the hardness and porosity and such all the same. Just makes it easier to work with the piece, if it's all one material.
(But "whatever works!" I'm doing something half-similar, but I didn't have mold-making materials handy, and didn't want to wait until I got any, so, I just filled the kit's Baron head halves with Magic Sculpt, and stuck the halves together, and let it harden ... and then, I am re-sculpting the kit's bits, that way. It's two materials instead of the ideal "just one" but it's a solid part, now, so the whole idea of being able to grind off whatever looks like it doesn't belong, still works. And details can be layered on it, too.)
Just throwin' some alternatives out there, in "food for thought" mode, if anyone else wants to re-sculpt a kit figure.

Using an old junker to mock up the pilot .

Too cool! The scarf jumps out (in a very good way) but the goggles, lapels, and leather helmet details all add excellent touches as well! Loving the head's angle, too. Looks a lot better or more natural, facing 3/4 forward and "level". The custom touches you've added all sell the idea of forward flight. Good stuff!

Agree on the coolness! The pilot/driver's personality has always been an important part of the DW line, and the guy you've molded fits so perfectly

Thanks much guys ! I never realized how little room there is for a pilot . My next one gets the cockpit enlarged , maybe move the headrest back a bit .

Last minute change . . . four wings instead of five . And my little prop rod didn't work , it wouldn't support the weight .

4 wings looks better. I'm having trouble getting a good pic of my pilot, due to wing 4of 5.
