quick update:
with good weather I got things painted.
testing decals and found that they had gotten brittle and cracked. not wanting to use stickers I tried hand painting the stripes. Only they never looked correct to me.
with the weather still good I started over.
now it's repainted and ready for the sticker. My last option.

Thanks guys! I have been thinking of scoring around the stickers then repainting the red stripe. the stickers needed to be cut many time to meet the body lines without bubbling or folding. However it looks great now and there is no reason to change anything.
