Starryeyes is right; when y'all share your tips and tricks it helps me to be a better modeler. I was taught the Enamel rattle can, taping off, wet sanding, tiny testor pots of paint style of modeling from my father who started in building in 1952 ,,,,,"When Revell was still in Pasadena Ca, can you imagine Revell doing business in Pasadena any more?",,, I think he means the good old days. I had learned one way and found it works well,,, on cars, Figures not so much. Wood, wool, plants, rust, asphalt all have a texture. I needed to figure out texture.
My mother is an art teacher and she was willing to give me some lessons, over the phone.
My brother builds displays for the Steinhart aquarium San Francisco, he too was a great wealth of knowledge.
And LaughingDoe is willing to let me "look, listen and learn."
so a pic of what I'm using, any questions just ask.
Enamel green spray and aluminum testors for the beer and case.
And I think that the Brown primer (not in pic) is also Enamel. For me, it is easier to lighten a color than darken. I find it also creates depth and shadow once acrylics are layered on.
Acrylics:
Liquitex: burnt sienna
Simply Acrylic: black
Artist's loft: Portrait pink, orange, unbleached titanium white, Pearl(white), Old gold, Metallic blue, Metallic purple, Metallic Phthalo green
Craft smart: Parchment, Brick red, Spanish Olive, sailing sky, golden brown, burnt orange
Galeria: Phthalo green (very old tube, color split, I failed at painting flawless beer cans)
Academy: Yellow ochre,,,,I use this as a base for skin tones, want a sunburn add orange and burnt sienna , or maybe a pale nerd just add the unbleached titanium white. You can see a small mix for my touch ups is a tiny pot in front of the large tubes (Get you some)
I can't say one brand is better, these are just the paints I seem to have or was given
Golden, makes the Clear leveling gel, that I need more practice with
All the small pots have my washes in them. I make them myself, water- windex - acrylic and mix. Some times I leave out the windex.
I have a pearl black, Pearl black-bronze, Pearl old gold-golden brown, unbleached titanium white- pearl that I am using here.
Hodad's hair is burnt sienna then layers of burnt orange
skin is the Yellow ocher+pink+Orange+burnt sienna
teeth are parchment then a light cover of pearl white
T-shirt is straight Yellow ocher, covers well
Sweater is unbleached titanium white with the Pearl old gold-golden brown wash where the sleeve is patched, Black acrylic built up layer by layer to create raised stitching and Golden brown buttons. I used the unbleached titanium white- pearl wash to highlight the raised parts of the sweater and let the unbleached titanium white Acrylic be the shadows, rather then trying to darken a white sweater making it muddy.
Shorts are the Sailing blue with the pearl black wash
Sandals are Spanish olive for now, I'm not done yet.
Fingernails got a touch of mod-podge (not in pic)
Cig is Parchment with an orange cheery, black ash and pearl black wash.
clam and crab are Golden brown with spots of metallic purple, metallic blue, Spanish olive and then covered with a light dry brushing of more Golden brown. Clam got a few more layers.
Stand is golden brown. Washed with Pearl black-bronze and after that drys a Pearl old gold-golden brown wash. Ca has a lot of iron pyrite dust in the sand making everything sparkly.
Thank you all for checken out the hodad. Agian if you have questions or if I was unclear, let me know.
