I am trying to challenge myself more. With the Satan's Crate I just finished, I was forced to try a muddier style of painting. This was outside my comfort zone and took me some time to learn and feel ok with the out come. But I find that, I need that kind of challenge. While looking at model kits with LaughingDoe, She asked what I consider to be a tough kit to build? I told her that the Silly Surfers have a reputation for being difficult. She suggested I "try those then". Was this a challenge? I picked up 2 Sillysufers and chose the Hodad to work on first. I did start last week and got alot of sanding and filling and sanding done. I used the trusty goopy ol tractor primer. Filled in alot of the cracks I missed but after dry time I was still unhappy with the gaps in the parts, so more filling, sanding and priming. I feel a little better about things now. There are some thing to put together still, 6pack and pelly but I am not sure what I want to do with them yet.

HoDads are a despicable breed. In the surf scene they are party animals, can't surfboard the waves so hang about beach hoping to get lucky. I created a diorama using 2 of the "Silly Surfers" kits. Will try to add photos, cannot photobucket anymore. Cheers Hey It worked, small, click on for bigger, but got around the 'bucket'

Can't be sure of that as I am only on my first Silly surfer so far. I wouldn't mind trying those Frantics too.

He had a B*tchen woodiewagon. He would drive up and play loud music, drink and heckle us about our surfing ability. One day one of the older kids pointed out he was a Hodad. We all asked how he knew? "His dang board is bolted to his car!" sure nough there were no straps just 4 big bolt heads. HODAD!!! Thanks for sharing your Silly Surfers. I have had a real hard time finding pics of others builds. I love the colors youve used on yours and great work on that woody. If any one else has sillysurfers or Frantics pics I would love to see them! Thanks

Hello Grumpygrowly Please take care of that concussion and make sure a Dr. clears you for work or driving. I am posting more photos of the dio build. Hodad got fresh feet from Mr. Gasser those sandals were toooooo big. I copied a Hawaaian shirt pattern from a Google find. Cigar was shortened and new Budweiser labels for new beer cans, plastic beer can frame from real thing. Gave him a 'chick magnet' button ( like he needs it ! ) My painting process usually includes primer then base coating with acrylics then oils for most figure surfaces. Woodie was airbrushed and clear-coated as required. Woodie got front fenders from '55 Chev custom buckets and rears from a Kenworth. Horn was relocated and surfer mascot glued to the rad top. The Woodie is meant to be twisted with a wheel off ground for the kit base, I changed all that. The beach sand is from Cancun via a friend. Did you see the clams? Cheers Gord

I had a bit of fun painting bits. Clam and Crab are painted as I find them here in CA tidepools. I tried to "redden" the hair of the Hodad. I used a chalky white paint for the "rolled Cig?" And I thought he might be enjoying a six pack of Rolling Rock, cans still need aluminum tops. Again thank you all for checken in on the Hodad and Me.

Your painting skills are AAA+++ ! Thanks! Beers? I popped some holes in the empty cans and left out 2 of the 8 cans that came with the kit. I did spray can the beers; i wanted a crisp look to them. I tried to hand paint and I always showed texture in my brush strokes. However, Laughingdoe has a what I would call a "magic box"; It has a wonder of mixers for oil and acrylic paints so you can get your desired effect. Like Hodad's cig, it's painted with "liquid Parchment" that I "borrowed",,,oops. On the top layer, in the box is, Black gesso, Mixing white, Crackle pastes and gels, 7 types of molding paste, Varnishes, pearl lusters, some texture builders,,,,,, and then I saw the self leveling gel. Mixed a bit up, but even with Laughingdoe's self leveling gel I wasn't happy with the out come. So I went back to the rattle can. everything has a time and a place, using the correct tool can make a world of difference. It does help to know how to use those tools, I'll ask her next time. ? ? ? "magic box" ? ? ? No I can't tell Y'all what else is in there. I fact, What box? I hit my head, I don't remember any box....
