I was called to a clients house this past month because a tree had died. this tree died 10+ years ago and their idea was to cover the stump with black tarp and compost to kill it over time. 3 years ago they changed the driveway's approach to the house and in doing so cut into the slope the now long dead tree had held up. Now the slope has slipped; Here in CA we have a shallow topsoil covering clay. when the clay gets wet it gets heavy and slippy. with the last rains, my clients new drive (cut out of the bottom of the slope) has been covered by a slumping slope and a 6-8 inch crack has opened at the top of the slope next to the root ball of another tree. It is a bit like dominoes.
Things will be fine, just a small retaining wall and fill in the crack in the earth to prevent more slipping.
retaining wall up and now for the crack in the ground. As I moved the back fill into place something caught my eye; in the crack in the ground was a small bright green?? thing???
I bent down to pick it up,,,, found it to be a Bathtub toy, like a rubber ducky.
I grabbed it just to clear the hole before filling and threw it in the back of the truck in a bucket of roots and green waste. Filled hole, Job done!
A week later my wife Doe found the toy in the green waste bucket and scolded me for "putting,, Rubber,?, in the green waste". the toy was then thrown in my direction.
It was only at this point did my brain see it for what it truly is: A child's bath toy, a green rubber dragon with only 1 tooth, goofy eyes and a very excited look on it's face.
Instantly named him Norbit. Darn thing had sat under ground for so long that the rubber had turned hard, feels almost like a resin figure now.
Thats when i remembered what It'sonlyakit said in another post, about thinking of different ways to buy/get models new or used. This was not a model, but I could treat it as one!
Next we take Norbit in for a bath and after that we will look him over more closely.
