Somewhere I have photos of Mini Zingers that Denny Johnson built using some Mini-Lindy bodies and always thought that would be a fun quick project ! I've got a bunch of HO slot car bodies and dozens of Muscle Machines so I grabbed a few of each to gave it a try . The nice thing about Muscle machines is they are assembled with screws so getting parts is a snap . I'm starting with these . . . A quick mock up for some ideas . Looks like it will be easy but that never happens ! Stay Tooned !

Looks like some fun builds! Definitely different , if they stay simple it will be fun ! I started with the VW Bug by trimming a chassis on each side to fit . Then cut the front off and added a piece to locate the front axle . Pretty simple . The Baja Bandito was next , no way one of the chassis would fit so a plate was cut from sheet plastic . An added bonus is the plate actually "snaps" into place . After fiddling around for a while I ended up cutting some half moon shaped pieces to hold the axles in place . Also cut the metal axles in the center and used some tubing to adjust the width . So far so good . I figured the S'Cool Bus would be tricky and it was . Again a plate was cut to snap in but something was needed so it didn't just flop around in the body . Eventually I added two small ears ahead of the rear tires , these go up against the orange plastic windows in the body . Up front plastic was added and the plate rests on the stock axle mounts in the body . After adding the half moon pieces for the axles it was done . This one took several tries with different ideas . Much more time involved but still fairly simple . I'm going to add some details like springs and ladder bars to them before paint . Thanks for lookin' !

Over the weekend I spent a couple hours adding to the chassis , basically just cutting and gluing bits of scrap plastic to add a little detail . No measuring just eyeballing everything , and a little smeared glue was okay too ! Yesterday they were sprayed black and then some color was added by brushing some acrylics , when dry I finished them off with a coat of gloss clear . The last step was brushing some Molotow onto the ladder bars and front axles . I'm definitely doing a couple more of these !

Time to do some surgery on the bodies to install the engines . This part always makes me nervous 'cause I've ruined my share of bodies doing this , and two of these won't be painted so that just makes it more nerve wracking . Fortunately everything went okay . Still need to clean up the openings and install some mounting plates for the engines but I'm going to jump around a little , too many gears grinding in my head . Next I made up some headers from tubing for the S'Cool Bus and the Baja Bandito , they'll just glue to the chassis . Headers for the VW Bug were much more difficult and after a couple failed attempts I ended up using some solder , I also drilled holes in the chassis and used it as a jig to build the headers . When finished everything was super glued in place so nothing would move . Jumping again to the engine for the Bug . It will get a more complete engine than the others so one was disassembled so it could be modified . After some cutting and another blower and scoop from a second engine I had a double blower setup . Just need to modify the belt to fit . In case you haven't figured it out yet . . . this is going to be a "Li'l Killer" Zinger . Here's a couple pics of Denny Johnson's original "Killer". The model that started it all back in January 1970 at the 2nd annual MPC Contest in Detroit !

Getting close on the S'Cool Bus . . . Headers and blowers are glued in place and I'm working on a scoop , not sure if the scoop is big enough or not , we'll see . There's a Plan B if it doesn't work out . Also some progress made on the VW Bug . . . Found and installed some wheelie bars , sanded the ribs off the scoop and rounded the shape , and finished the blower belt/pulleys . Also sprayed some primer and picked a color . I have several yellows and the Chrome Yellow was closest to the original color . The "KILLER" on Denny's Zinger came from the original AMT Super Bug kit and I just happen to have an old set from '68 or '69 . It didn't take long to scan them and reduce them to a smaller size to print some decals . The weather's been cooperating lately so I should get some paint on it by the weekend !
