Anyone want to share their work area pix? Here is mine. Every model I have ever built has been built on that old desk my Great grandfather built for me. It was built in Novato, CA. from wood from his farm. I can see the top of Heavenly Ski Resort just barely through the trees on the left. Attachment Deleted

Man, your workspace is so neat I'd be embarrassed to show you mine ! Picture what yours would look like if a tornado ripped through your room ; that's my area !

Cool idea for a message thread. I'm always curious to see how / where other people work on their hobby stuff. As for my personal work areas: I'm busy going through and organizing / renovating my work areas, right now, so this is very timely. I did take some "before" (the proverbial tornado hit!) type pics ... so, once it's "all organizee" and just generally in half-decent shape again, I'll see if I can't get some "before and after" pics going.

YES - I want to see all your work spaces. That is one of my favorite things to see is where we all work. Some guys work in the basement and some guys on the kitchen table. Where are the pix?
Back in 2003 I did an article for Scale Auto called "The History of Surf Kits" and for a follow up was going to be "work spaces" so we could all see the one thing we all have in common working with models. Well...I got exactly one person to send pix of his workspace out of hundreds of personal requests. Everyone had a lame excuse from too messy to I don't want people to know what rare kits I have. WTF???
So here I am again 11 years later trying for another go. Here is a little set-up I made in my garage of what a 60's era work area looked like. All the stuff on the workbench was actually mine in the early 60's including the late 40's moto-tool I got from my dad and my original X-acto knife set from 1964 and my original transistor radio and switch blade. Plus original tubes of glue and paint set with my original blue Duncan Yo-Yo. Yes - I tend to keep some stuff around too long!.Attachment Deleted

Okay Fletch , this is where I spend my time ! An old student desk covered with carpet and a cardboard barrier to keep that damn cat from getting too nosey ! It's a nook off of the family room where my computer and all my reference books are . To the left (not seen) is the bookcase and my drafting table , to the right is the TV , stereo , and a few steps away is the garage/workshop where all of the dirty work gets done . BTW I live alone so nobody ever complains about the mess or the fumes !

Great thread, I also like to see where your builds emerge! Here is mine, it is in the basement, a room that I had to get ready first, paint the walls, the floor isolated and laid the wood laminate, and then came the hard part, all the furniture set on the "right place" and then fill in all the stuff! On the whole, everything is already in its place, Ok, here and there, there are certainly organizational retouching, but I know everything blindly, where and what is... The first thing one sees when coming in, is this: And this, my son's workplace: He also wanted a place, where he can make something, even if sometimes it is just a mess... The following pictures are of the room in a counterclockwise direction:

Quoting TooOld:
> To the left (not seen) is the bookcase and > my drafting table , to the right is the TV , > stereo , and a few steps away is the > garage/workshop where all of the dirty work > gets done .
Any chance of seeing some more angles / shots? The full drafting table set-up would be of particular interest, to me, since I've been considering getting one; or possibly making myself one. Would be cool seeing your overall set-up, to "steal ideas from".
Now that my working room is (MUCH belatedly!) getting de-cluttered enough for me to consider adding more "stations" at one place or another, around that room, the idea of "what else should I add" tends to be more intriguing than depressing. (Having the raw space, but using it very poorly, was a major downer!) I'll probably post some pics of what I have come up with, so far, set-up-wise, before too much longer -- those pics still being "in progress" pics, but should give some idea of the various "stations" I'll have set up, in one place or another, around the room. Sounds like you've been organized, all along, as I'm trying to get into the habit of being ... so, that's another reason I want to see how others do things!

Here's a quick trip around my "Monster Room" where I do most of my modeling. The south wall where the computer is The East side where the work bench and photo areas are The North with lots of junk on display Finally the West and least interesting since that's where the closed doors are....what can you do? These photos are a couple of years old so the room has changed a bit, but this is pretty much it.

I'll work on taking some new ones, to show recent changes and upgrades ... but meanwhile, here's an oldie from March 2013 -- -- and another older pic (this one being taken in May of 2014) --

Here's two pics showing my main work area ... ... but it wasn't always this clean / neat / empty-looking, or whatever. Just ten days ago, the view through that closed door looked like ... With a bunch of work de-cluttering several rooms, upstairs (where my shop areas are), and a bunch of moving around (and some re-purposing) of furniture, that cluttered room ended up looking like this: ... mainly because, after emptying out all sorts of stuff I didn't need, in various small closets upstairs, I could then use that same storage space to much better effect ... in that it wasn't "crap storage" any more; it was "neatly organized storage for a huge amount of kits and projects". I guess my point is: a month ago, there's no way I would have uploaded pics of my work areas! I'm sure I had oodles of you beat, for a near-total lack of utility in my work spaces ... not to mention having the place look like a contender for "Hoarders: The Intervention" or some such thing. In any case, after having decided things needed to change for the better, and spending weeks of spare time doing that work ... The pathetic part of things was that I had spent years acquiring all sorts of cool tools and what not ... but, due to poor space management, etc., barely ever got to use them. With the new way I'm doing things, there are various "stations" around my main working room's space -- with this one being a very sturdy table that I can have all sorts of powered tools on. The idea being: I'll never have enough space to have all of these tools, "out" and ready to use, all of the time. So, the work-around is: when I'm not using one specific tool, I'll just store it under the table. A few minutes of pulling one tool out of "active" circulation, and putting it into "storage" and vice-versa, and I have a BUNCH off cool "new" ways I can get stuff done. And no, I'm not too proud to use a sturdy trash can as a work table! From time to time, I might want an additional table ... and having used this one a lot, out in the garage and what not: I know it's rock solid. (And as a side benefit, I can make sure I keep any future clutter to a minimum!) These storage totes, while visible and what not in the "shop" areas, might bother some people -- but it doesn't bother me. The organizational improvements they offer, more than compensate me for their kinda shoddy looks. Besides, it's mostly "just me" in these areas, anyway, so it seems like a good compromise. To put things in a bit more context ... yeah, the totes could look better. But all in all, compared to how things were before: I'm a'keeping 'em!!!
