Ok.. I'm getting ready to add some accessories to a display.. One of the items is a "fly" in which in the past I have used small diameter mechanics wire to simulate flight.. Does anyone else have another option for suspending an object like small insect ?

I am not sure how big is the small fly, but if you can get a some what firm or hard plastic strands often found on optic fiber lamps.. and see if it can bear the weight then attach to something as it can stands. I would also might try fishing line if you want to hang from the upper area surface.

I thought about trying to run a thread through some 5 minute epoxy just to see what the results would be... I do like the fiber optic idea .. I've also come several different diameters of piano wire that might suffice...

maybe you can find piano wire or guitar wire which is very thin and almost fine... then make a curvy shape as perhaps a one spiral as if the fly is fling in circle and then attach it to a spot some where on the model. Making it look like the fly flew from the spot where it is attached onto. Just another thought as well

Your options are probably limited by what you can find in your area . The fiber optic strands sounds good but I'm not familiar with what sizes are available . I have some piano wire that's .010" diameter and some brass (K&N ?) that's .005" diameter ! I've also found some 12' lengths of stainless wire as small as .010" but it's only available in a bulk pack , and Plastruct has clear acrylic rod but .062" is the smallest . I'd probably scrounge around my garage and check the wire strands in extension cords or other cable . Or you could just heat and stretch some clear styrene !

I've got various diameters of steel wire in 36" lengths ... I should be able for make something work !

What about coiled tungston filiment from a light bulb? Great idea Keith ... I needed something longer for this project because of the height .. I grabbed a piece of .010 wire and wrapped it around a wooden dowel to get a coil effect.. I'll keep the light bulb filliment in mind for another day !!

Chuck you might try wrapping your wire around something like a funnel......this should give the fly a circular widening flight path as it climbs.....could even have it buzzing around a character like a tornado and you wouldn't have to fuss with trying to disguise the wire....did that make sense?

where I positioned the fly would make it tough in this situation .. winding around the big old surfboard, Sammy, and such.. I made a much smaller circular pattern that should suffice for this build ... but there's ALWAYS next time buddy !
