Question for you..if you paid that much for a kit ,would you build it... or is it now a collectors piece?... i ask because i collect early matchbox toys... and i belong to all the collectors forum and i can't tell you how many time i see threads where guys but these really old cars and strip and repaint them...ruining the value ..i only repaint cars if i have a double and the one i'm redoing is in bad shape... was curious if the same applies to plastic kits?

I would not invest in stripping and repainting the original old kits or matchbox cars if they are scarce. Especially if it is already known as a brand identity, which identifies an item or color or logo as something of a history.. People who ruins it lose the value and is sad to see that happen.
As for the kits, I usually keep a lot of them in new conditions but if you find most glue bomb or used kits which is restore able then its a best opportunity to do the work and you really want to satisfy the urge to HAVE it on the shelf. I have a couple which I got earlier as a glue bomb. Especially if you are an expert in building and doing some work on model car then... Its the best chance.

I have seen these funster bugs going that high, I have one myself which is sealed... and I bought it for about 100 back almost 15 years ago and have seen one that went as high as 350 once. They are very hard to find now days.. I read an article explaining the royalty and ownership of the manufacturer designed cars... for vw, the company who issue them in model cars has to compromise with the ownership in order to create royalty so they have to pay some certain percentage to the company for using their design. So I think with that, not only vw but all other companies such as GM Ford and so on... they have to pay the royalty. I think that's where vw bugs become more and more scarce because they are not made in USA.

I usually do the same with kits . If it's one that is collectible to me I'll leave it untouched and build the second one I find , and sometimes I'll build the first one "stock" and do my own thing on the second one . It really depends on the kit as we all have different opinions on what's collectible . I didn't even bid on this one because I expected it to reach close to $200 and didn't want to spend that much for it . I have however spent almost that much on other kits and I'm sure some would think I was crazy for doing so !

By the way, if you read the description on the Funster Bug it stated it was missing three pieces. They were described as the shifter, passenger mirror, and trunk release handle and pointed out on the instructions. They were actually the passenger turn (mirror) signal, the exhaust pipe (shifter) going to the megaphone, and actual trunk release handle. Fortunately the wheelbase was not broken. So, whoever bought this collectable listing had to have spare parts, is looking for spare parts, or didn't read the description because they were so excited. The price was about average for the kit in that condition.

This seems like as good a time as any to bring this idea up, so here goes. I would like to borrow a Deal's Wheels VW body from someone, and return it. I would just do a set of careful "measurements," and then draw up blueprints -- and that's all. No sanding on the body, no molding or casting. Just "measure" it, then send it back. (The real term isn't "measurement". The term would be more like "lofting" it, or "taking the lines" of the body -- but those are terms more familiar to ship builders, so I'm saying "measurement" instead.) To get the idea of what I mean, I'll point people here: car-toons.proboards.com/post/5135/threadDoes anyone here want that done? Enough to loan me one of those rare bodies? Or if no one wants to do a loan of one of those rare bodies, then maybe sell me a damaged one? Or loan me one that had some damage, which I could attempt to fix ... and then return it, as an alternate possibility? (I only throw that one out there, because I know how to weld plastic parts, using heat -- which not everyone is comfortable with.) Send me a private message, if you're interested; and we'll work out any necessary details. The "why" behind this project is that I'd like to (at some point, down the road) modernize that body, in terms of model year. (Something like a 2013 model Beetle body instead of a 1970s version.) I'm talking more about building a whole new body from scratch, than modding an original Deal's Wheels kit body. Hence wanting "blueprints" of what the 1970s kit looked like, in terms of proportions / outlines / having many "cross sections" available, and so on. The changes to go from "original kit" to "never was" would be a "blueprint bash" instead of a "kit bash" -- which, to me, would allow more things to be changed, etc. Just throwing the idea out there, guys!

This kit is sort of a combination of two kits. The original BugBomb was retooled into the Lil Herbie , which got rid of the driver, the tach bulge ,the Deals style tires, and added the sunroof and old style VW bumpers. The Funster bug brought back the fat tires and driver . I'm not sure which is the rarest of the three, but with VW and their issues with licensing their name, none of them may be reissued.

They might re-issue more VW model kits as they have to pay all the legal fees and restitution for lying to the public over what I like to call "Smog-Gate".
